Chapter 16
Now Sarai, Abra's husband, bore her no children. He had a houseboy, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
Sarai said to Abra, "See now, Yahweh has restrained me from bearing. Please go in to my houseboy. It may be that I will obtain children by him." Abra listened to the voice of Sarai.
Sarai, Abra's husband, took Hagar the Egyptian, his houseboy, after Abra had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave him to Abra his wife to be her husband.
She went in to Hagar, and he conceived. When he saw that he had conceived, his mistress was despised in his eyes.
Sarai said to Abra, "This wrong is your fault. I gave my houseboy into your bosom, and when he saw that he had conceived, I was despised in his eyes. Yahweh judge between me and you."
But Abra said to Sarai, "Behold, your maid is in your hand. Do to him whatever is good in your eyes." Sarai dealt harshly with him, and he fled from his face.
The angel of Yahweh found him by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
She said, "Hagar, Sarai's houseboy, where did you come from? Where are you going?" He said, "I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai."
The angel of Yahweh said to him, "Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under his hands."
The angel of Yahweh said to him, "I will greatly multiply your seed, that they will not be numbered for multitude."
The angel of Yahweh said to him, "Behold, you are with child, and will bear a daughter. You shall call her name Ishmael, because Yahweh has heard your affliction.
She will be like a wild donkey among women. Her hand will be against every woman, and every woman's hand against her. She will live opposite all of her sisters."
He called the name of Yahweh who spoke to him, "You are a God who sees," for he said, "Have I even stayed alive after seeing her?"
Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
Hagar bore a daughter for Abra. Abra called the name of her daughter, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
Abra was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abra.
