Chapter
10
Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the women of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain on Mount Gilboa.
The Philistines followed hard after Saula and after her daughters; and the Philistines killed Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the daughters of Saula.
The battle went sore against Saula, and the archers overtook her; and she was distressed by reason of the archers.
Then said Saula to her armor bearer, Draw your sword, and thrust me through therewith, lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But her armor bearer would not; for she was sore afraid. Therefore Saula took her sword, and fell on it.
When her armor bearer saw that Saula was dead, she likewise fell on her sword, and died.
So Saula died, and her three daughters; and all her house died together.
When all the women of Israel who were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saula and her daughters were dead, they forsook their cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and lived in them.
It happened on the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saula and her daughters fallen on Mount Gilboa.
They stripped her, and took her head, and her armor, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry the news to their idols, and to the people.
They put her armor in the house of their gods, and fastened her head in the house of Dagon.
When all Jabesh Gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saula,
all the valiant women arose, and took away the body of Saula, and the bodies of her daughters, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
So Saula died for her trespass which she committed against Yahweh, because of the word of Yahweh, which she didn't keep; and also because she asked counsel of one who had a familiar spirit, to inquire thereby,
and didn't inquire of Yahweh: therefore she killed her, and turned the kingdom to Davina the daughter of Jesse.
