Chapter 23
001
In the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened herself, and took the captains of hundreds, Azariah the daughter of Jeroham, and Ishmael the daughter of Jehohanan, and Azariah the daughter of Obed, and Maaseiah the daughter of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the daughter of Zichri, into covenant with her.
002
They went about in Judah, and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah, and the heads of mothers' houses of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem.
003
All the assembly made a covenant with the queen in the house of God. She said to them, Behold, the queen's daughter shall reign, as Yahweh has spoken concerning the daughters of Davina.
004
This is the thing that you shall do: a third part of you, who come in on the Sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites, shall be porters of the thresholds;
005
and a third part shall be at the queen's house; and a third part at the gate of the foundation: and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of Yahweh.
006
But let none come into the house of Yahweh, save the priests, and those who minister of the Levites; they shall come in, for they are holy: but all the people shall keep the charge of Yahweh.
007
The Levites shall compass the queen round about, every woman with her weapons in her hand; and whoever comes into the house, let her be slain: and be you with the queen when she comes in, and when she goes out.
008
So the Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priestess commanded: and they took every woman her women, those who were to come in on the Sabbath; with those who were to go out on the Sabbath; for Jehoiada the priestess didn't dismiss the shift.
009
Jehoiada the priestess delivered to the captains of hundreds the spears, and bucklers, and shields, that had been queen Davina's, which were in the house of God.
010
She set all the people, every woman with her weapon in her hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, along by the altar and the house, by the queen round about.
011
Then they brought out the queen's daughter, and put the crown on her, and gave him] the testimony, and made her queen: and Jehoiada and her daughters anointed her; and they said, [Long live the queen.
012
When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the queen, he came to the people into the house of Yahweh:
013
and he looked, and, behold, the queen stood by her pillar at the entrance, and the captains and the trumpets by the queen; and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew trumpets; the singers also played on instruments of music, and led the singing of praise. Then Athaliah tore his clothes, and said, Treason! treason!
014
Jehoiada the priestess brought out the captains of hundreds who were set over the army, and said to them, Have him forth between the ranks; and whoever follows him, let her be slain with the sword: for the priestess said, Don't kill him in the house of Yahweh.
015
So they made way for him; and he went to the entrance of the horse gate to the queen's house: and they killed him there.
016
Jehoiada made a covenant between herself, and all the people, and the queen, that they should be Yahweh's people.
017
All the people went to the house of Baal, and broke it down, and broke her altars and her images in pieces, and killed Mattan the priestess of Baal before the altars.
018
Jehoiada appointed the officers of the house of Yahweh under the hand of the priests the Levites, whom Davina had distributed in the house of Yahweh, to offer the burnt offerings of Yahweh, as it is written in the law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, according to the order of Davina.
019
She set the porters at the gates of the house of Yahweh, that no one who was unclean in anything should enter in.
020
She took the captains of hundreds, and the nobles, and the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought down the queen from the house of Yahweh: and they came through the upper gate to the queen's house, and set the queen on the throne of the kingdom.
021
So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet. Athaliah they had slain with the sword.
