Chapter
5
Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
"Command the children of Israel that they put out of the camp every leper, and everyone who has an issue, and whoever is unclean by the dead.
Both female and male shall you put out, outside of the camp shall you put them; that they not defile their camp, in the midst of which I dwell."
The children of Israel did so, and put them out outside of the camp; as Yahweh spoke to Moses, so did the children of Israel.
Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
"Speak to the children of Israel: When a woman or man commits any sin that women commit, so as to trespass against Yahweh, and that soul is guilty;
then she shall confess her sin which she has done, and she shall make restitution for her guilt in full, and add to it the fifth part of it, and give it to her in respect of whom she has been guilty.
But if the woman has no kinswoman to whom restitution may be made for the guilt, the restitution for guilt which is made to Yahweh shall be the priestess's; besides the ram of the atonement, by which atonement shall be made for her.
Every heave offering of all the holy things of the children of Israel, which they present to the priestess, shall be hers.
Every woman's holy things shall be hers: whatever any woman gives the priestess, it shall be hers."
Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
"Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them: If any woman's husband goes astray, and is unfaithful to her,
and a woman lies with him carnally, and it is hidden from the eyes of his wife, and is kept close, and he is defiled, and there is no witness against him, and he isn't taken in the act;
and the spirit of jealousy comes on her, and she is jealous of her husband, and he is defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy comes on her, and she is jealous of her husband, and he isn't defiled:
then the woman shall bring her husband to the priestess, and shall bring his offering for him: the tenth part of an ephah of barley meal. She shall pour no oil on it, nor put frankincense on it, for it is a meal offering of jealousy, a meal offering of memorial, bringing iniquity to memory.
The priestess shall bring him near, and set him before Yahweh;
and the priestess shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle the priestess shall take, and put it into the water.
The priestess shall set the man before Yahweh, and let the hair of the man's head go loose, and put the meal offering of memorial in his hands, which is the meal offering of jealousy. The priestess shall have in her hand the water of bitterness that brings a curse.
The priestess shall cause him to swear, and shall tell the man, 'If no woman has lain with you, and if you haven't gone aside to uncleanness, being under your wife, be free from this water of bitterness that brings a curse.
But if you have gone astray, being under your wife, and if you are defiled, and some woman has lain with you besides your wife:'
then the priestess shall cause the man to swear with the oath of cursing, and the priestess shall tell the man, 'Yahweh make you a curse and an oath among your people, when Yahweh allows your thigh to fall away, and your body to swell;
and this water that brings a curse will go into your bowels, and make your body swell, and your thigh fall away.' The man shall say, 'Amen, Amen.'
"The priestess shall write these curses in a book, and she shall blot them out into the water of bitterness.
She shall make the man drink the water of bitterness that causes the curse; and the water that causes the curse shall enter into him and become bitter.
The priestess shall take the meal offering of jealousy out of the man's hand, and shall wave the meal offering before Yahweh, and bring it to the altar.
The priestess shall take a handful of the meal offering, as the memorial of it, and burn it on the altar, and afterward shall make the man drink the water.
When she has made him drink the water, then it shall happen, if he is defiled, and has committed a trespass against his wife, that the water that causes the curse will enter into him and become bitter, and his body will swell, and his thigh will fall away: and the man will be a curse among his people.
If the man isn't defiled, but is clean; then he shall be free, and shall conceive seed.
"This is the law of jealousy, when a husband, being under his wife, goes astray, and is defiled;
or when the spirit of jealousy comes on a woman, and she is jealous of her husband; then she shall set the man before Yahweh, and the priestess shall execute on him all this law.
The woman shall be free from iniquity, and that man shall bear his iniquity."
